Field workflow guide

A stable core for MSL, pharmaceutical, and medical-device field workflows

The core workflow can stay familiar across field roles: a permitted internal purpose, a visible input boundary, a designated human reviewer, and a clear stop condition. The organization separately governs the role-specific context around that core.

Scope boundary. This guide is not for patient or EHR data, clinical advice or treatment decisions, HCP or employee scoring, compliance or employment decisions, or automatic external action.

01

Define one permitted purpose

The organization identifies a narrow, non-patient documentation or preparation purpose before any material is considered.

02

Keep the available basis visible

The record distinguishes the limited material available for internal review from the draft itself. Missing context is not filled with an assumption.

03

Assign a human decision owner

A designated person remains responsible for keeping, revising, narrowing, pausing, escalating, or discarding an internal draft.

04

Use a closed stop state

When the input or request falls outside the stated purpose, the correct result is to pause or stop—not to expand the use case informally.

Separate governance, same clear language

Each audience needs a role-appropriate use case—not a generic promise.

MSL and Medical Affairs teams

A Medical Affairs workflow must be separately defined and governed by the organization. It is not a shared commercial permission model, and it is not for scientific-response drafting, medical-information records, clinical decisions, or HCP profiling.

Pharmaceutical sales teams

A commercial field workflow can focus on permitted internal documentation and future-conversation preparation. It is not a mechanism to infer prescriber behavior, rank healthcare professionals, make employment decisions, or claim a sales outcome.

Medical-device sales teams

A device-field workflow must remain distinct from device-promotion approval, device-selection support, clinical-use guidance, regulatory judgment, or patient-specific information.

The review conversation

Start with one narrow workflow question.

  1. 1

What one internal documentation or preparation question are we trying to resolve?

  2. 2

Which non-patient material categories has the organization already determined are permitted?

  3. 3

Who is the eligibility owner, designated reviewer, and decision owner?

  4. 4

What condition requires the team to pause, discard, or use a separate established process?

  5. 5

Which clinical, regulatory, employment, profiling, and external-action decisions remain outside the workflow?
